Week 14: The Interdependence of Physical and Spiritual Liberties

The following is a talk that I did for Sacrament meeting on the Interdependence of Physical and Spiritual Liberties.














Introduction:
Patrick Henry: “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death”  Thomas Paine said these immortal words and asked these questions which got me thinking of a few questions that we need to ask ourselves:
  1. What is Liberty?
  2. What can happen to our liberties?
  3. How do we avoid having our liberty taken away? Or how do we gain it back if we do fall?
  • First question: What is liberty? John Locke definition... ”Liberty is to be free from restraint and violence from others...For who could be free, when every other man’s humor might domineer over him? But a Liberty to dispose and order freely as he lists his person, actions, possessions and his whole property within the allowance of those laws under which he is, and therein  not to be subject to the arbitrary will of another, but freely follow his own.”(Locke: Concerning Civil Government pg#37a)
Mosiah 29:32 “...but I desire that this land be a land of liberty, and every man may enjoy his rights and privileges alike, so long as the Lord sees fit that we may live and inherit the land, yea, even as long as any of our posterity remains upon the face of the land.”
  • Second: What can happen to our liberties?
Mosiah 24:11-13 is an account of Alma and his people losing their liberties.
“For Amulon knew Alma, that he had been one of the king’s priests, and that it was he that believed the words of Abinadi and was driven out before the king, and therefore he was wroth with him; for he was subject to king Laman, yet he exercised authority over them, and put tasks upon them, and put task-masters over them.
And it came to pass that so great were their afflictions that they began to cry mightily to God. And Amulon commanded them that they should stop their cries; and he put guards over them to watch them, that whosoever should be found calling upon God should be put to death.
And Alma and his people did not raise their voices to the Lord their God, but did pour out their hearts to him; and he did know the thoughts of their hearts.
And it came to pass that the voice of the Lord came to them in their afflictions, saying: Lift up your heads and be of good comfort, for I know of the covenant which ye have made unto me; and I will covenant with my people and deliver them out of bondage.”
Liberty is so important to the Lord that even when we have made mistakes and lost our liberty through disobedience. He is always willing to reach out and help us if we choose to let him.
Here is an example of a people that chose to serve God.
Joshua 24:15-16 “And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.
And the people answered and said, God forbid that we should forsake the Lord, to serve other gods;”
Because if we serve other Gods we will be brought into bondage physically.
We must retain our liberty spiritually or else we will be destroyed both Physically and spiritually. The Lord warned against this by saying through a prophet.  
Mosiah 29:27 “And if the time comes that the voice of the people doth choose iniquity, then is the time that the judgments of God will come upon you; yea, then is the time he will visit you with great destruction even as he has hitherto visited this land.”
The Lord cannot protect us if we are not following his commandments.

Captain Moroni understood this natural law and took action!
Alma 46:8-13 “Thus we see how quick the children of men do forget the Lord their God, yea, how quick to do iniquity, and to be led away by the evil one.
Yea, and we also see the great wickedness one very wicked man can cause to take place among the children of men. Yea, we see that Amalickiah, because he was a man of cunning device and a man of many flattering words, that he led away the hearts of many people to do wickedly; yea, and to seek to destroy the church of God, and to destroy the foundation of liberty which God had granted unto them, or which blessing God had sent upon the face of the land for the righteous’ sake.
And now it came to pass that when Moroni, who was the chief commander of the armies of the Nephites, had heard of these dissensions, he was angry with Amalickiah. And it came to pass that he rent his coat; and he took a piece thereof, and wrote upon it—In memory of our God, our religion, and freedom, and our peace, our wives, and our children—and he fastened it upon the end of a pole.”
Another example of taking a stand for freedom was penned by the founding fathers in The Declaration of Independence.
 “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation. We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”
These are examples of  nations that turned to God and understood that physical and spiritual liberty are interdependent, They need each other.
  • How do we avoid these traps or get back on track when we do fall? By Following the commandments of God and fight for what we believe in.

Examples are The Nephites
Mosiah 9:17-18 “Yea, in the strength of the Lord did we go forth to battle against the Lamanites; for I and my people did cry mightily to the Lord that he would deliver us out of the hands of our enemies, for we were awakened to a remembrance of the deliverance of our fathers. And God did hear our cries and did answer our prayers; and we did go forth in his might; yea, we did go forth against the Lamanites...even until we had driven them out of our land.”

Alma 43:9-10 “And now the design of the Nephites was to support their lands, and their houses, and their wives, and their children, that they might preserve them from the hands of their enemies; and also that they might preserve their rights and their privileges, yea, and also their liberty, that they might worship God according to their desires.
For they knew that if they should fall into the hands of the Lamanites, that whosoever should worship God in spirit and in truth, the true and the living God, the Lamanites would destroy.”
we must always be ready to stand for what we believe in to preserve our freedom at all costs.

Freedom was the Lord’s plan for our happiness and was obtained by our Saviour Jesus Christ.
Mosiah 5:8 “And under this head ye are made free, and there is no other head whereby ye can be made free. There is no other name given whereby salvation cometh; therefore, I would that ye should take upon you the name of Christ, all you that have entered into the covenant with God that ye should be obedient unto the end of your lives.”

I know that we are able to become free from bondage both, spiritually and physically through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. These liberties are interdependent upon each other. If we are free spiritually, we can have the ability to obtain freedom physically and vica versa. Alma and his people were free spiritually and through which they obtained physical freedom.  The Nephites retained their Physical liberties through the obedience of spiritual laws.

Week 10: Freedom!

FREEDOM!


We have been studying: The Making of America, The Federalist Papers, and
the Declaration in Independence.

Dr. Brooks has explained freedom as follows:
We are here on this Earth, we are born and have the ability to choose either,  Light or Darkness.  Commandments given  from God, are what lead us to light. In the beginning of our life  we are told what to do, we do things because we're told to do them, not because we want to do them.


As time goes on (from left to right of fig).  we get older and we exercise our own will, As we are going along we get to a point where we choose to either follow the commandments (the left side of the triangles) ,  that lead to light (freedom side of figure),or we choose darkness by not following the commandments.  The Commandments  either become more of a burden to us and we turn away from them (arrows pointing back to the left).
or we embrace them and make them our own at which point we're through a tight and uncomfortable passage that has changed our will to the kind that knows what do you with freedom.  We are on the other side where freedom then expands
“But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law.” (Galatians 5:18)

At first when I read this I thought it meant “You can do whatever you want, as long as you say the spirit tells you to do it.” I knew this to be incorrect, so I looked into it farther. I realized that it means, If we follow the commandments long enough pretty soon we will only be guided but the spirit. The commandments are our training wheels. When we are trained to listen to the spirit and govern ourselves. The commandments are no longer a burden for us and we gain so much freedom! Nephi experienced this in Helaman 10:4-5 God says “Blessed art thou, Nephi, for those things which thou hast done; for I have beheld how thou hast with unwearyingness declared the word, which I have given unto thee, unto this people. And thou hast not feared them, and hast not sought thine own life, but hast sought my will, and to keep my commandments. And now, because thou hast done this with such unwearyingness, behold, I will bless thee forever; and I will make thee mighty in word and in deed, in faith and in works; yea, even that all things shall be done unto thee according to thy word, for thou shalt not ask that which is contrary to my will.” Nephi understood what it was like to have true freedom. His will and mind were in line with the Lords. We sometimes need rules and regulations to help form us into the people we need to become to fulfill our missions in life. Those that do not follow the commandments will never know what true freedom is.

Week 9: The Tet Commandments

The Tet Commandments
Yes, you read that right Tet, not Ten, I will explain in a min. I will warn you what you are about to read will make you think really long and hard! This is not for the faint of heart or mind.
We have been diagramming the Ten Commandments this past week, this is what we found according to the translations that we were given for we read it in the original Hebrew, We found that the commandments are way more cut and dry then what I grew up knowing. Compare this with Exodus 20:2-17

Aleph (1) As you can see this firsts one is not a technical commandment. Just a statement from the Lord of who he is.

As you have been reading you may have come to the same conclusion that I did. There are really only nine commandments technically! The number for nine in Hebrew is Tet. Crazy right? My mind is still recovering from being blown! 2016-06-08 10.56.21.jpg Planting tomatoes in the greenhouse!

Week 8: Better Brains than Beauty

Better Brains than Beauty
Latin was finished on Monday. I would like to share my favorite of Aesop’s Fables with you in Latin then in English.
De Vulpe et Pardo
Vuples et Pardus de pulchritudina concertabant et, Pardo suam
pellem versicolorem extollente, Vulpes, cum suam praeponere non
possit, dicebat Pardo, “At quanto ego sum speciosior, et quam longe formosior,
quae, non corpus, sed animum versicolorem et
variis notis insignem sortita sum?”


Literal English:Of the Fox and the Leopard
A fox and a leopard about their beauty were arguing and, the leopard his own pelt varicolored is praising, the fox,  when his to put forward not able, was saying to the leopard, “By how much I am more attractive, and by how much by far more shapely, that not of body, but of mind varicolored and divers a mark conspicuous obtained I am.


Idiomatic English translation: The Fox and the Leopard
A fox and a Leopard were arguing about their beauty.
The Leopard was praising his own varicolored coat.
When the fox could not put forward is coat in comparison.
He said to the Leopard “I am more attractive, and shapely, not in body, but my mind is varicolored and divers, it is a mark notable, and something that I have obtained..”   


This fable is my favorite because I feel that is it more lasting and important to have a well trained mind then it is to be beautiful. Also, there is much that I can do to obtain that training of mind, where there is not much that I can do to obtain physical beauty.
Knowledge is more lasting than physical beauty.   

We partied on Tuesday to celebrate the commencement of an intense Latin course, by sitting around the campfire discussing The Merchant of Venice By: William Shakespeare. I also pulled out my violin and played around the camp fire. It was the most nostalgic I have felt in a long time the coolest effect ever.
My favorite character is Portia, Smart, funny, Portia has the best lines, my favorite being “God made him, and therefore let him pass for a man.” I also love how she knows what she wants, and she's not willing to compromise, to obtain her ends.  



We have a new member of our student body: Gordon Dupuis, he is from Milo, Idaho. He likes cars, animals, and creating something out of nothing.
We also added two new members of the farm. Meet Portia and Nerissa. They are lamancha goats they love eating everything in sight and rubbing on humans.



This week features Mr. Hurtado in the kitchen with a knife. Cutting watermelon that is.







I was assigned to teach the 6 year olds in church. I am really excited to be able to inspire children to greatness!

Week 7 Latin! A Student Body in a Ditch

So this week was LATIN! We used Aesop’s Fables in Latin by: Laura Gibbs as our textbook.
Here is how it works: We open the book, Mr. Hurtado reads the fable to us in Latin, Then we try to figure out words that are close to English. Mr. Hurtado would give us hints sometimes, Then we would look up all the words we didn't know, in a glossary in the back of the book, Put the story together in English and then memorize it in Latin. Here are a few pictures. The first fable we learned is in the picture above.
To describe this picture I say: This is us “ditching class”, “A Student body in a ditch.” So yes, we are in a ditch, studying Latin.

Yes, our classroom is what God alone can give. This picture actually portrays a very intense Latin program, even though it does not look like it.

We would come to class at 9am go until 12pm. Break for lunch & study. Reconvene at 2pm go until 5pm. Have dinner & study until about 10pm this lasted from the 21st of May, through the 31st.  (We did take Sundays off)  Other than that so intense, so much fun and so much Latin learned.

Pythagoras in Action!

Week 6: Leadership and Liberty!


Leadership and Liberty!
This week it's been like none other. (ok, so that is every week, moving on.)
We went on a hike early in the morning about 6 o'clock. We drove up the blue mountain. We hiked so that we were really in the trees and in the clefts of the mountains.
We did some mental exercises where Dr.Brooks, would have us think 15 years ahead in our life.
I thought how interesting it would be, to be in a crisis situation here is America, have a solution to the problem critically thought through and be able to solve it.
Having to lead a nation which I never really thought about before was mind stretching for sure. He also encouraged us to become one with nature in that moment. Our vantage point on the mountain was on the side of the mountain, we could see the tops of the trees in the valley below. I thought how wonderful it would be to be able to jump from tree top to tree top.

We left that spot and went to the top of a bunch of boulders, where we discussed being vulnerable. How important it is to be vulnerable with others and how to be a leader we have to show vulnerability at times. Being vulnerable means letting someone into your heart, showing
emotion or weakness even when you really don't want them to see it. Dr. Brooks said as leaders we need to learn when to be vulnerable with others so that they will follow us.
This week's project has been making a slab of concrete for jumping rope on in Physical Training. (Have you ever tried to jump rope on a dusty ground or gravel? Yeah, that is why we need a slab.)

Holli this one is for you! A^2+B^2=C^2. Dr. Brooks explained math (the Pythagorean Theorem) in a way that made sense! We were doing practical math, not just abstract math. So great! Making sure we have the cement, sand to gravel ratio right. It is 1:2:3, 1 part cement, 2 parts sand, 3 parts gravel. Incase you wanted to know.
Pull up bar and concrete slab. Done! We also learned how to make really awesome graphics this week, check out the one I made up top and the one at the burden! We have learned how important Networking is and social media. So you will be bugged by me even more now! Just know I am just doing my assignments! We read the books Leadership and Self Deception (Arbinger Institute), and The Conscious Creator By: Kris Krohn and Stephen Palmer. Dr. Brooks knows Stephen personally so we were able to talk to him after our book discussion over the phone. He gave us some advice about goal setting. He said “Act as though your goal has already happened. Act like your goal is reality.”
